Newborn care
Caring for a newborn can seem challenging at first, but with time you will become more confident and comfortable with basic care.
Here are some guidelines to help you care for your newborn:
1. Feeding: Feed the baby whenever they are hungry, following their cues of rooting, sucking, or crying. If you are breastfeeding, this usually happens every 2-3 hours. If you are formula-feeding, follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper preparation.
2. Diaper changing: Check the baby's diaper regularly and change it whenever it is wet or soiled. Clean the genital area with wipes or cotton soaked in warm water and dry thoroughly before putting on a new diaper.
3. Bathing: Bathe the baby a few times a week, using warm water and mild baby soap. Be sure to firmly support the baby's head and dry them completely after bathing.
4. Sleep: Place the baby on their back to sleep in a cot, in a safe environment, free from loose objects such as pillows or blankets. Follow safe sleep guidelines to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
5. Umbilical cord care: Clean the umbilical cord stump with 70% alcohol after each diaper change, until it falls off naturally.
6. Skin-to-skin contact: Have skin-to-skin contact with your baby whenever possible, as this can help strengthen the bond between you and promote the baby's healthy development.
7. Health monitoring: Pay attention to the baby's health signs, such as body temperature, heart and respiratory rate, sleep and feeding patterns, and seek medical attention if you notice anything unusual.
These are just some basic guidelines for caring for a newborn. As you gain experience and become more comfortable with baby care, you will find your own routine and methods that work best for you and your child.
